Direct Outside Air Free Cooling Solutions for Data Centre
What is Direct Outside Air Free Cooling? Using highly filtered outside air is an extremely effective way of cooling a Data Centre and, within Europe, can be utilised for the majority of the year - without the need for mechanical cooling. By using direct outside free air, equipment such as condensers, compressors and fans are not constantly operating, consuming large amounts of energy. The adoption of ASHRAE Data Centre guidelines TC9.9 has significantly reduced the need for mechanical cooling to a few hours, if at all, per annum, resulting in substantial energy savings, whilst also extending the expected lifespan of the cooling equipment. By raising the supply air temperature, the number of days where direct free cooling can be utilised increases substantially - resulting in significantly lower energy costs. This arrangement is improved even further when aisle containment is incorporated into the Data Centre (as indicated below). 234 FREE COOLING DAYS 285 FREE COOLING DAYS 320 FREE COOLING DAYS 345 FREE COOLING DAYS 361 FREE COOLING DAYS 22ºC - Room Temp 24ºC - Room Temp 27ºC - Room Temp 22ºC - Server Inlet Temp 24ºC - Server Inlet Temp 27ºC - Server Inlet Temp 168 CHILLING DAYS 131 CHILLING DAYS 80 CHILLING DAYS 4 CHILLING DAYS 20 CHILLING DAYS 45 CHILLING DAYS Typical ‘Aisle Containment’ Cooling Applications - London UK Typical ‘Room’ Cooling Applications - London UK 197 FREE COOLING DAYS
